My time as an intern at Raconteur
My name is Sabah, I’m studying geography at UCL and will be starting my second year in September. This summer, I undertook an internship at Raconteur and the experience has taught me more skills than I could have imagined. During my first week, I had the opportunity to dive right in and help with the online editorial process. Often this would entail writing creative briefs on special reports and tagging online articles.
My job over the next few weeks involved social media, where I was responsible for planning and executing social media posts, ranging from simple links and image posts to long-read article summaries. I used the social media scheduling service, Agorapulse, to create a timeline of content to be posted on different social media accounts. While doing this, I was also responsible for becoming familiar with the Raconteur brand and capturing their style of content online. I also created videos for social media. This involved researching and finding relevant articles to turn into shorter videos, covering topics from YouTube advertising to child labour.
One of the most exciting things I was able to do during my internship was to write an article on any topic I chose and publish it on their website. I decided to write one on social commerce and how it could revolutionise the way we shop. Ultimately, all the tasks that were set took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to gain new skills, as well as insights into the range of attributes needed for a work environment like this. While supporting these projects, my skill set has grown immensely, and I’ve learned so much about the behind-the-scenes side of online publishing online. This will undoubtedly help me in the future wherever my career takes me.
This being one of the first experiences where I was in an office environment, I didn’t exactly know what to expect. But the environment here at Raconteur is extremely welcoming and supportive. This has truly been a great learning experience and I’ll be forever indebted to those who gave me a hand here. It was truly a pleasure to be an intern at Raconteur and I know that my experience has set me up for success. There are not enough words to describe how thankful I am to Sam and Fran and all of the others at Raconteur for giving me the opportunity to learn so much.
Thank you!
